When it comes to owning a pool you can never be too safety conscious. You may have heard about the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. If you own or operate a commercial pool you will definitely know and must comply. We feel that residential pool owners should know and comply as well. This Federal Pool and Spa safety act mandates that all drain covers manufactured after 12/20/2008 that come into the US comply and all public pools comply with ANSI/ASME A112.19.8. and suggests that all residential pools should comply as well. For the pool owner this means that your drain covers should be exchanged with the new model to protect children from entrapment related injuries at the drain. Kids and teens have had hair or fingers get entrapped and sucked into the drains which can sometimes hold them down until they drown. If your covers are not marked with ANSI/ASME A112.10.8 they are not compliant and most drain covers made before 2009 are not compliant. We strongly suggest that every pool owner update the covers in the pool and spa to protect themselves and their guests.
