Swimming Pool Filters: DE, Cartridge, and Sand
Pool Filters

DE FILTERS
DE stands for Diatomaceous Earth which is a fine powdery filter media that can trap particles as small as 3 to 5 microns which is smaller than can be seen with the human eye. The filters grids become coated with the DE powder creating a filter cake that continues to filter and trap the tiny particles. A properly maintained DE filter will strain out algae spores, dirt, dust, and even some bacteria. A DE filter needs to be backwashed to waste when the pressure reading is 8 to 10 points higher than the clean reading. When backwashing is not enough to bring down the pressure reading it needs regeneration or in other words a thorough cleaning. To properly clean a DE filter it should be completely broken down and all parts and grids should be carefully inspected. Certain o-rings should be inspected and lubed or replaced as necessary. The picture above is a typical DE filter cleaning, before and after.

CARTRIDGE FILTERS
A cartridge filter will filter out 10 to 20 micron particles. The cartridges need to be cleaned out fairly often sometimes as much as every 3 to 4 months depending on the use and debris going into the pool. The cartridges are limited in use and should be replaced when the pleats become loose or the metal bands start to loosen or break. They can last several seasons, but every pool is different and it will depend on the use and maintenance.

SAND FILTERS
A Sand filter will filter out 20 to 100 micron particles and becomes more effective as it captures more dirt. It uses pool grade silica sand as a filter media. The sand needs to be changed out periodically or when the pressure will not lower with backwashing or is 10 psi above the clean reading. While the sand lasts a long time, it can become hardened with calcium, or gummed up with lotions and oils being filtered though the sand. When the sand has deteriorated it needs to be cleaned out and replaced with new sand.
