According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission…
• About 300 children under 5 drown in swimming pools each year nationwide
• More than 2,000 in that age group are treated for submersion injuries
• Many of the accidents that do not result in death do result in brain damage
• At the time of most accidents victims are being supervised by one or both parents
• 65% of accidents happen at a pool owned by the child’s family 33% a friend or relative
• A child can drown in the amount of time it takes to answer a phone
• 77% had been missing from sight for 5 minutes or less
• Survival depends on the child being rescued quickly and getting the breathing process started immediately
• There is typically no splashing to alert anyone that a child is in trouble
• A fence or other barrier of at least 4’ should be installed around the pool with no foot holes for a child to use for climbing
• Child safety fencing should be installed at least 24 inches from the inside edge of the pool in order to have space enough to perform CPR in an emergency
• Any doors out to the pool should be fitted with alarming devices
Prevention steps
1. Make sure if you have a babysitter, that they too are instructed on how to use your alarms and pool fence openings to ensure the pool is not left exposed while parents are away.
2. Always appoint a designated “Watcher” during pool or outdoor parties, adults easily become distracted during large gatherings.
3. If a child is missing always look to the pool first as every second counts if a child is drowning.
4. Keep your pool water clear and free of debris so that you can always see the bottom.
5. Never allow young children in the pool without an adult.
6. Even if a child has had swimming lessons they must be watched closely.
7. Floatation devices are not a substitute for supervision.
8. Learn CPR and hire babysitters who know CPR too, relatives who watch children should also know CPR.
9. Be sure you have rescue equipment and a telephone near the pool. You can even purchase water proof cordless phones now, great for pool owners.
10. Do not keep toys near the pool when not in use they may attract children to the pool area.
11. Never prop open your pool gate or barrier.
